Bureau of Primary Healthcare Funding & Programming for FQHCs

The Bureau of Primary Healthcare (BPHC) is committed to strengthening the nation's healthcare safety net through its support of Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs). A key initiative is the Prevention Community of Practice (P-CoP), spearheaded by the MidAtlantic AIDS Education and Training Center (MAAETC). The P-CoP focuses on equipping FQHCs with the knowledge and readiness to significantly increase HIV testing and the use of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP).

Empowering FQHCs to Combat HIV

The primary goal of this MAAETC project, supported by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) BPHC, is to empower health professionals within FQHCs to competently deploy evidence-based HIV prevention strategies, including PrEP. This initiative specifically partners with FQHCs that receive Ending the HIV Epidemic (EHE) funding within the MAAETC region. By doing so, the project aims to:

  • Increase HIV testing rates: Ensuring more individuals at risk for HIV are aware of their status.
  • Boost PrEP knowledge and readiness to prescribe: Expanding the capacity of FQHC providers to offer this vital prevention tool.
  • Improve access to care and patient outcomes: Making sure that preventative measures are readily available to those who need them most.

A Collaborative Approach to Quality Improvement

The P-CoP invites an inter-professional, cross-site team of FQHC staff to participate. This includes individuals involved in patient assessment, HIV testing, PrEP prescribing, and educating both patients and fellow team members. This collaborative approach directly aligns with HRSA's emphasis on continuous quality improvement (CQI), ensuring that FQHCs are consistently enhancing their services and effectiveness in HIV prevention.
