Health Disparity and Social Determinants of Health & HIV
- Define “health equity.”
- Identify the social determinants of health and impact on those with HIV.
- Explore interventions to promote health equity within communities, systems of care, and clinics.
- Discuss unique challenges for rural areas and small towns/cities.
Chronic Mental Health Issues & Substance Use Disorders in HIV Care
- List challenges persons with mental health issues and/or substance use disorders face in HIV treatment.
- Identify approaches to assessment of persons with HIV in these populations.
- Identify key interventions for persons in these populations.
Engagement, Re-engagement, and Retention in HIV Care & Motivational Interviewing
- Outline benefits of initiating antiretroviral therapy (ART) regimens for people newly diagnosed (including rapid ART), counteracting suboptimal dosing, and maintaining engagement in care.
- Demonstrate approaches and tools medical case managers can use to support treatment adherence, including with clients who are newly diagnosed or struggling to adhere.
- Describe motivational interviewing and its collaborative, goal-oriented style of communication with particular attention to the language of change.
- List, describe, and demonstrate the “do’s” and “don’ts” of motivational interviewing that elicit and strengthen motivation for change in people with HIV.
Trauma-Informed Care and Stigma in HIV Care
- Define stigma in relation to HIV and discuss the negative effects as well as the barriers to care.
- Discuss symptoms and impact of trauma.
- Identify trauma-informed practices that support people with HIV.
