HIV Early Treatment Initiation in Today’s Clinical Practice
Viral suppression is the goal of HIV treatment. HIV treatment dramatically improves the health, quality of life, and life expectancy of people living with HIV. Additionally, people living with HIV who take HIV medicine as prescribed and get and keep an undetectable viral load have effectively no risk of transmitting HIV to their HIV-negative sexual partners.
To improve retention and viral suppression rates in patients newly diagnosed with HIV and those returning to care, many systems people are working towards adopting protocols for Early Treatment Initiation. Early Treatment Initiation goes by many names, such as rapid start or test and treat, but underlying all of these is the goal of connecting the patient to treatment as soon as possible.
The overall goal of the discussion:
• Discuss the importance of Early Treatment Initiation
• Gain an understanding and working knowledge of the key steps necessary to prepare for and implement a protocol for Early Treatment Initiation
• Share educational resources and tools for initiating, maintaining, and sustaining an Early Treatment Initiation program
