The MidAtlantic AIDS Education and Training Center, West Virginia Regional Partner's mission is to increase providers' capacity to provide high-quality HIV/AIDS care within our health care systems. Changes occur rapidly in the HIV/AIDS arena and all interested health care professionals should seek yearly updates to stay current.
Objectives:
Upon completion of this program, participants should be able to:
- Describe current United States and West Virginia HIV epidemiology and outbreaks
- List current CDC recommendations for HIV Testing
- Discuss the types of HIV tests and considerations for when to use what type
- Briefly explain HIV test result counseling and post-test care
- Demonstrate how to use rapid, point of care tests that are available for clinic and non-clinic settings
- Describe the demographics and epidemiology of new HIV diagnoses in West Virginia, Appalachia, and the United States
- Discuss HIV transmission and commonly used substances and associated risk
- Compare the overlap in HIV prevention and the health outcomes of people who inject drugs (PWID)
- Offer next steps and ways to be an advocate for change as providers and community partners
