Participants in this webinar will explore the particular mental health needs of persons living with HIV. This will include a discussion of HIV stigma and how race and sexual orientation/gender expression impact the mental health of HIV-positive persons.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:
- Name three contributing factors to poor mental health outcomes among persons with HIV
- Identify at least three mental health issues that are more likely with persons living with HIV
- Explain how race and sexual orientation interact to increase mental health issues in HIV positive persons
- Name three challenges that are unique to people with HIV that are situational challenges to overcome
Speaker: David Hoover, MDiv, MSW, LCSW
David Hoover has been working in the field of HIV since 1990. During his career, he has served as a medical social worker, HIV/STD program manager, early intervention program manager, and a regional site director for the MAAETC Inova Juniper regional partner. Mr. Hoover has also been a therapist in private practice and is trained in EMDR, Mindfulness, and various other treatment modalities. Mr. Hoover is the creator of GaySpirits, a retreat for men who have sex with men which focuses on the mental health and spiritual needs of MSM. Mr. Hoover has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Emory and Henry College, a Master of Divinity degree from Louisville Presbyterian Seminary, and a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Louisville.
