Motivational Interviewing Intial Training course must be completed, prior to being admitted to this course.
Course Description:
The Motivational Interviewing (MI) training program is designed to provide MI training to Ryan White Case Managers throughout the state of Virginia. Participants will be introduced to the theoretical foundations of MI, the role of ambivalence in behavior change, basic MI skills, and how to identify and elicit change talk with clients. The trainings will provide an opportunity to learn and practice MI skills, followed by a demonstration of the student’s proficiency in basic MI skills.
Course Objectives:
- Describe the spirit of MI and guiding principles.
- Demonstrate proficiency in basic MI skills (e.g., OARS).
- Identify and cultivate change talk in interactions with clients.
Course Delivery & Requirements
During your client simulation your client simulation session reviewer will be observing you for your ability to demonstrate the following skills:
- MI Spirit: Collaborative, empathic, non-judgement environment
- Open-Ended Questions: Question with more than a “yes or “no” or single word response.
- Affirmations: Opportunities to affirm (compliment) and reinforce client strengths
- Reflective Listening: Repeating or rephrasing what the client has said or an emotion to encourage the other person to elaborate, amplify, confirm, or correct
- Summarizing: Reflections that pull together several things the client has said P
- Evocative Questions: Recognize and elicit change talk using evocative questions (e.g., “in what ways does this concern you? If you decided to make a change, what might that look like?”
- Readiness Ruler: Demonstrate using the Readiness Ruler to elicit change talk. Pay careful attention to using the correct prompts
Certificate of Completion
Certificates will be provided upon completion of the client simulation which confirm 1 hour of simulation. In addition, the MINT (Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers) Trainer who observes your session will recommend next steps for continued skill development.
