Program Overview
Youth ages 12 – 18 are in a critical period of development. Addressing and educating providers about substance use in youth is an important task that providers in multiple settings can implement. Over 40 years of research into substance use indicate that individuals who begin using alcohol, tobacco or other drugs during their youth are more likely to develop dependency in adulthood. The American Academy of Pediatrics and other organizations recommend screening and brief intervention to prevent or reduce substance use as part of routine care for adolescents. This webinar will look at patterns of substance use for youth ages 12 – 18 and examine how screening and brief intervention can be used with the youth population.
Upon completion, participants will:
• Describe current patterns of substance use for youth
ages 12-18
• Explain how screening and brief intervention for substance
use can be used with the youth population
• Provide resources on screening and brief intervention
for youth
