Motivational Interviewing Intial Training course must be completed, prior to being admitted to this course.
Course Description:
The Motivational Interviewing (MI) training program is designed to provide MI training to Ryan White Case Managers throughout the state of Virginia. Participants will be introduced to the theoretical foundations of MI, the role of ambivalence in behavior change, basic MI skills, and how to identify and elicit change talk with clients. The trainings will provide an opportunity to learn and practice MI skills, followed by a demonstration of the student’s proficiency in basic MI skills.
Course Objectives:
- Describe the spirit of MI and guiding principles.
- Demonstrate proficiency in basic MI skills (e.g., OARS).
- Identify and cultivate change talk in interactions with clients.
Course Delivery & Requirements
This course is designed for medical and non-medical case managers funded under Ryan White parts A, B, C, & D. Motivational Interviewing certification is required of all VDH Part B -funded case managers. This course will be presented over 2 days. To receive full credit and certifcation in Motivational Interviewing, you must enroll and attend both days and, during the second day, successfully demonstrate MI skills to the MI trainers, both of whom are members of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers.

Motivational Interviewing Certification
Certificates will be provided upon completion of the entire progrom which confirm 13 hours of training in MI. Those who only attend part 1 will recieve a Certificate of Attendance reflecting 6.5 hours of training.
